Location
Gap Creek Retreat is located in the Bloomfield River area right on the southern edge of the Cedar Bar National Park and the northern edge of the Cape Tribulation National Park, 200km north of Cairns. This is part of the Daintree World Heritage area.
The retreat is 50Km north of Cape Tribulation or 55Km south of Cooktown.
Although the road between Gap Creek and Cape Tribulation requires a Four Wheel drive vehicle, Gap Creek Retreat is easily accessible from the Cooktown direction with a conventional vehicle. (This does include 30Km of gravel road.) Driving a conventional two wheel drive vehicle across the creek to the property is not recommended, however you can park in the private parking area and easily walk across the creek.
Getting There
We advise that you travel with recent publications of travel maps at all times when driving in country areas.
Google Maps provides resonably accurate directions and maps to reach Gap Creek Retreat. See the map insert on the page. From the Gap Creek Retreat information bubble – first click on “Get Direction” link and enter the address you will be driving from. You will be presented with a list of directions and distances.
If you are travelling from Cairns you will travel past the world famous tourist town of Port Douglas and the historic sugar town of Mossman. Twenty minutes north of Mossman you cross the Daintree river by ferry ($10 per car) and enter the Daintree National Park. Drive carefully through the rainforest to avoid hurting cassowaries and other wildlife.
The drive north through beautiful lush rainforest takes you through the villages of Cow Bay and Cape Tribulation. This entire area is world famous for the world heritage rainforest and is almost entirely dedicated towards tourism.
The last 50km through the northern end of the Daintree National Park is known as the ‘Bloomfield Track’. This was the scene of huge protests by conservationists in the early eighties when the road was first being constructed. To this day it is an unsealed gravel road though dense rainforest with numerous creek crossings - suitable for 4WD drive vechicles only.
The “Bloomfield Track” ends at the Bloomfield River. Here you cross the river on a large concrete causeway. Now you pass by the Aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal and the road to the spectacular Bloomfield Falls. Soon you will pass the village of Ayton and then arrive and Gap Creek Retreat.
We recommend planning ahead and purchasing groceries and other supplies in Cairns or Cooktown before visiting Gap Creek Retreat. There are shops in nearby Ayton or Wujal Wujal but the range of goods is more limited.
